Faults

BMW 1 Series Common Faults: E87 and F20 — N47, Clutches and Steering

The 1 Series is the BMW that still fits London side streets. Here are the faults that actually appear on E87 and F20 cars we see at Forest Road.

BMW 1 Series Common Faults: E87 and F20 — N47, Clutches and Steering

E87 versus F20

E81/E87 (2004–2011) is rear-drive and simple. F20/F21 (2011–2019) gained more electronics, N13/N20 petrols and N47 then B38/B47. Both generations bring N47 118d/120d cars to Hainault with chain questions. We treat the engine code, not the “1 Series” badge.

Diesel chain and dual-mass flywheel

N47 in a 1 Series is the same family as the 3 Series, just in a lighter car that sometimes rattles sooner because owners stretch oil intervals. Dual-mass flywheels on manuals shudder at 2,000 rpm in second around town. A clutch kit without a dual-mass inspection is how you do the job twice.

Petrol N13/N20 and cooling

N13 116i/118i cars have timing-chain and turbo issues if oil is neglected. Electric thermostat and pump faults mimic a head gasket to a general garage. We pressure-test and read ISTA temperature plausibility first.

Steering, rust and water

Electric power-steering faults on E87 can be the rack or a voltage issue. Rear-arch rust is an MOT classic. Sunroof drains on F20 block and wet the floor modules — random window and lock faults follow. We dye-test drains before coding new modules.

What a 1 Series still does well

As a CBS-serviced London car with a documented chain (diesel) or a healthy cooling system (petrol), a 1 Series is cheap to run compared with an X5. We will not talk you into a 5 Series you do not need.

Frequently asked questions

  • How much do BMW diagnostics cost?

Our standard diagnostic charge is £85 inc. VAT, which includes a full ISTA / Rheingold scan across every control unit, live data analysis and a written report. We credit the charge against any repair we carry out.

  • What does a stretched BMW N47 timing chain sound like?

A metallic rattle on cold start, usually lasting 1-3 seconds and going quiet when warm. Often accompanied by a camshaft / crankshaft correlation fault code. Common on N47 1 Series and 3 Series diesels.
