BMW 4 Series Common Faults: F32 and G22 — N55/B58, Charge Pipes and 8HP
The 4 Series is a 3 Series with a lower roof and the same mechanical list. F32 and G22 faults we see at Hainault: leaks, charge pipes, diesel DPF and 8HP.
F32/F33/F36 versus G22/G23/G26
F32 coupe, F33 convertible and F36 Gran Coupe sit on F30 running gear: N20/N55 petrol, N47/B47 diesel. G22 onwards uses CLAR: B48/B58 and later diesels. We service both from Forest Road. The Gran Coupe is still a 4 Series for parts, not a 5 Series.
Petrol: charge pipe, VANOS, HPFP family
N55 cars share charge-pipe splits, VANOS solenoids and the odd HPFP relative of the N54 story. Oil-filter housing gaskets drip. G22 B58 cars are generally happier but still get cooling-system and oil-separator jobs at mileage. ISTA first.
Diesel and 8HP
F32 420d cars can be N47 — chain questions apply. DPF on short trips is the same as a 3 Series. 8HP judder is common on both generations when fluid is original at 70k.
Roof, drains and cameras
Convertibles add roof-drain and pump jobs. Coupes add camera calibration after windscreen chips. We mention them because electrical ghosts on a 4 Series are often water, not a failing DME.
Buying a used 4 Series
Same inspection as an F30/G20: scan, cold start, leaks, 8HP adaptations, tyres (alignment). M440i B58 cars are desirable; inspect cooling and service history rather than the badge.
