BMW Brake Pad Wear Sensor: Why the Dash Says Worn Before the Pads Look Finished

The pad-wear warning is a sacrificial wire in the pad, not a guess. This guide covers inner-pad bias, CBS reset, and why driving on for months scores the discs.

BMW Brake Pad Wear Sensor: Why the Dash Says Worn Before the Pads Look Finished

The sensor is designed to fail first

BMW embeds a loop of wire in the inner pad. When wear reaches it, the circuit opens and the cluster says brake pads worn. The outer pad may still look thick. That is normal — calipers wear the inner first. The warning is “book this week”, not “you have 3,000 miles of leisure”.

CBS and ISTA reset

After pads (and sensors) we reset the CBS brake counters in ISTA. Without that, the car keeps the warning or shows a nonsense remaining distance. A general garage that “clears the light” with a clip-on resistor is not a pad job. We fit quality pads, new sensors, and reset CBS at Forest Road.

Discs, corrosion and London use

Short trips in London rust the disc face. Grooves from a sensor already through the pad mean discs as well. We measure thickness; we do not automatically sell a four-disc kit on a car that only needs pads. If the lip is huge, we will show you.

DSC, fluid and the pedal

A pad warning plus a soft pedal is also fluid or a hose, not only pads. We inspect. Brake fluid is a two-year CBS item — if it is due we will say so rather than ignore it next to new pads.

Typical independent prices

Front pads and sensors on a 3 Series are a different number to an X5 M Sport with huge discs. We quote fixed price after a look. Running the sensor into the disc is how a £200 job becomes a £600 job — the warning exists to prevent that.

Frequently asked questions

  • My BMW says "Brake pads worn". Do I have time to drive?

Yes — the sensor warns before pads are dangerous. But book in within the next week. Running past that point risks scoring the discs, which turns a £189 job into a £500+ job.
