BMW DPF Blocked: Signs, Regeneration and When Cleaning Beats Replacement

A blocked DPF on a 320d that only does short London school runs is predictable. This guide covers the warning signs, forced regen, off-car cleaning and the ash limit that forces a new filter.

BMW DPF Blocked: Signs, Regeneration and When Cleaning Beats Replacement

What the DPF is trying to do

The diesel particulate filter traps soot and burns it off in regeneration when exhaust temperature is high enough. Short trips around Redbridge never get there. The car tries, fails, tries again, then puts up a DPF warning or limp mode. That is a process failure, not a moral failing — but you cannot ignore it.

Signs before limp mode

A DPF light, rising idle, fan after shutdown, a burning smell, poor fuel economy, and “drive to complete regeneration” messages that never complete on the A406. If you keep resetting the light with a phone app, ash and soot climb until the car refuses to play. Book ISTA while it still drives.

Soot versus ash on ISTA

Soot can often be burned off with a forced regen or a proper highway run. Ash cannot — it is incombustible residue from oil and fuel. ISTA shows both. Below the ash limit we clean or regen; above it, a new or quality reman DPF is the honest answer. We will not sell a £1,400 filter when a clean would have worked.

Why oil spec and EGR matter

Non-LL-04 oil increases ash. A leaking EGR cooler or a failed injector dumps unburnt fuel and oil into the filter. Fixing the DPF without fixing the cause is a comeback. At Hainault we check EGR, injectors and oil spec as part of the DPF job.

Deletes are not a service we offer

Removing a DPF is illegal for road use and an MOT fail. We restore the system. If someone already deleted it, we will tell you what it takes to put it back — and we will not pretend a blanked map is a repair.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can a blocked DPF be cleaned instead of replaced?

In most cases yes. We check soot and ash loading on ISTA first. If ash loading is below the limit, a forced regen or an off-car clean usually restores function. Only when ash loading is beyond the service limit do we replace the DPF.

  • My BMW says "AdBlue: starts not possible in 900 miles". Can you fix it?

Yes. The countdown is triggered by a specific fault in the AdBlue / SCR system — usually a NOx sensor, AdBlue injector or tank heater. Once the root cause is fixed and verified, we clear the countdown on ISTA.
