BMW X5 E70/F15/G05 Air Suspension: Springs, Compressors and Why One Corner Drops Overnight
A dropped rear corner on an X5 is almost never “just the compressor”. This guide covers E70, F15 and G05 air springs as we repair them at our Hainault workshop.
E70, F15 and G05 are not the same bag
E70 (2006–2013) uses a different air-spring design to F15 (2013–2018) and G05 (2018–). All three can sit low overnight. E70 rear springs perish at the rolling convolution. F15/G05 rear springs leak at the top seal and the bag. We identify the chassis from the VIN because parts are not interchangeable, and because G05 compressor logic is more aggressive about shutting down when it sees a leak.
Why the compressor is usually the second victim
The compressor fills a leak all night. Duty-cycle climbs, the dryer saturates, then the compressor dies. Replacing only the compressor on a leaking G05 is how customers pay twice. We soap-test and use ISTA ride-height logs to find the corner first. One rear spring is common; both rears together is commoner once the car is 7+ years old.
Front versus rear
Rear springs fail more often because they carry the load and the heat from the exhaust. Fronts fail too, especially on E70s that have sat in winter. A car that is low all round may be a compressor or valve block; a car low on one corner is a spring until proven otherwise.
Valve block, lines and sensors
Valve blocks leak internally and move air between corners. Lines chafe on E70 undertrays. Ride-height sensors get kicked off on speed bumps in Newham. ISTA can command fill/exhaust per corner so we are not guessing. Coilover conversions exist; we will discuss them, but most London X5 owners want the factory ride back.
After the repair
New springs are calibrated with a ride-height reset and a four-wheel alignment. Skipping alignment after E70/F15/G05 spring work eats inner tyre edges on the A12. We include the geometry check at Forest Road.
