Used BMW Buying Guide: London Inspections Before You Transfer the Keeper
The cheapest BMW on Facebook Marketplace is often the most expensive. This is the pre-purchase checklist we use at Hainault for 1 Series through X5 and iX.
Pay for a scan before you pay for the car
A torchlight look in a retail park misses stored faults, CBS resets without oil, and adaptation values that say the 8HP is already unhappy. Our inspection is ISTA plus a road test plus a lift. It is cheaper than a recovery from Romford a week after purchase.
Engine-family questions
N47: cold-start video and chain history. N54: HPFP and wastegates. N20: chain and charge pipe. B47/B48: EGR cooler and oil leaks. VANOS codes: oil spec. We match the checklist to the VIN, not a generic “BMW PPI”.
SUVs and air
X5/X7/7 Series: overnight height, compressor duty, transfer-case chatter. A dropped corner that “pumps up on the drive over” is still a spring. Budget it into the offer.
Documents that matter
Invoices that name LL-01/LL-04, 8HP fluid, and ISTA work. A stamped book with no invoices is theatre. Two keys, service printouts, and a VIN that matches the HPI. We will say if the cluster looks freshly reset.
How to book
Buyer books the slot, seller brings the car to Forest Road, or we collect locally in Redbridge/Newham. You get a written traffic-light report. Walk away if it is red; that is the service working.
